sanding scratches I can believe it, I have sanded and buffed quite a bit of gelcoat, and most definetly it has happened to me. Couple things, I don't think the compounds work as well as advertised when they say they remove p800 or p1000 scratches, maybee if you do it a couple times and are really good with the buffer.
Hatteras are built in molds and do have gelcoat, but they chose paint for finishing, for what reason I don't know. But Hatteras are highly regarded, so I believe that says something. Anyway, when I refinish a boat, I paint because it is cheaper, easier, and looks just as nice. Touch ups and repairs are much easier as well. Just my 2 cents worth.
The best, but most expensive option to restore the clear coat is to refinish it with clear gelcoat. A less expensive but more repetitive alternative is to refinish with automotive clearcoat. The least expensive option is to polish your boat with Kwik Shine but it may require a little more effort on your part.

Re: gelcoat refinish? Ok here is an update: I started skimming entire bottom of hull with the gelcoat repair kit and realized the entire bottom is heavily scratched and there are several epoxy patches which it won't stick to.and the gelcoat repair stuff is a mess.
To successfully refinish a gelcoat on your boat, you will have to remove the old gelcoat in that area, prepare the surface, reapply the gelcoat and seal it properly.
